Feats of Incredible Strength and Flexibility with @rubberlegz

For more breakdance contortionism, follow @rubberlegz on Instagram.

Professional dancer Rauf Yasit (@rubberlegz) can stretch into such seemingly impossible shapes that you might think he has no bones in his body. His self-portraits on Instagram are called “Freezes” that he says require him to “click, run, and quickly get into the pose.” Some positions he can hold for only a few seconds, others for much longer. “With time you get to know your body,” he says. “You grow into it.”

The son of a folk dance teacher from Kurdistan who would make him perform traditional Kurdish dances at weddings, Rauf fell in love with breakdancing as a 12-year-old in Germany. His life as Rubber Legz began when an early back injury forced him to take a different approach, shifting his focus from acrobatics to flexibility. He started watching contortion videos and integrated elements of yoga into his breakdance moves. Rauf is now a full-time dancer with his stage group, Flying Steps, who are currently on tour in Germany. He’s also at work on a book that will feature his poses across the landscapes of Reykjavik, Iceland. He says he wants to “express pure and beautiful things” with his dancing and credits the Instagram community as a motivation for pushing the boundaries of his art—and flexibility.

Recently I went and watched the new Superhero/Science Fiction film “Guardians Of The Galaxy.” I was over all very impressed with the film, and think it is a great adaption from the comics to movie form. I really enjoyed the retro 80’s aspect too. Such items as Star Lord’s Walkman with mixtape, along with the comedic humor really set the tone of this film.
Aside from the humor. I do have some things that Id like to express in my opinion that made the film not as enjoyable as it could have been for me. For instance the over use of violence. While there was a decent bit of humor, the characters seemed to injure, or kill almost everything in the film.
Another thing that made me sad to see Marvel do was having Rocket Raccoon’s character literally poke fun at, and act cruel towards the disabled. For instance their are two scenes, one where he suggests stealing a mans prosthetic leg for use in the prison escape. Another such reverence was to an individuals eye. In my honest opinion you shouldn’t have to poke fun at people with dissabilities, and certainly be extremely cruel to make a great film!
My favorite character next to Star Lord in the film was the one called “Groot” portrayed by actor Vin Diesel. His character seemed the most pure, and the one that promoted the most “Peace” etc. I think this maybe because he was of nature. Since he was more or less a living, breathing, tree he had an almost spiritualistic trait about him. Three scenes stood out in my mind that pertain to this character in the film. These scenes include where Groot picks a flower, and hands it to a little girl. This was an act of kindness. Another was when he used his powers to illuminate, and bring light to Ronan’s starship. Lastly was when his character made the ultimate sacrifice, by using his powers to save his friends.
However something else I noticed about the sacrifice he made was that Groot didn’t die. He actually in a way was reborn, and ascended back to life. This was a result of not only Rocket having taken a part of him, and planting it in a pot to grow. But rather that with great humility, comes reward. In other words Groot not only was a real hero, but was the one who was most in tune with the Galaxy, and nature as a whole.
In conclusion I do highly suggest viewing this film. Especially if you are into comics, or science fiction in general. I would however keep an open mind, and try and understand the things I have expressed in this article if possible. Thanks for reading!
